Support for the contemporary arts

The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès encourages new talent and supports emerging forms of artistic expression. Reflecting the artistic roots of the house of Hermès, support for the production of new works of art is a central concern. True to the house's culture of artisanship, the Foundation focuses on direct funding for creative artists, for the realisation of their works.
The Foundation has inherited Hermès's interest in the diversity of the contemporary art scene, providing support for artists working in a broad range of disciplines.
Specific projects embrace both the production and dissemination of works of art.
In this context, the Foundation oversees planning and programming for six exhibition spaces worldwide (in Bern, Brussels, New York, Seoul, Singapore and Tokyo) in collaboration with specialist curators, most of whom offer a particular focus on site-specific installations. Video works commissioned from a number of artists each year are screened in a touring, self-contained architectural unit, the H BOX. Visual artists are invited to take up residencies at the Hermès workshops.
The Foundation organises two prizes designed to encourage rising talent: the Hermès Foundation Missulsang for contemporary art in Korea, and the Prix Émile Hermès in the field of design.
The Foundation also supports exhibitions and productions in the performing arts, especially new works exploring the intersection of different artistic disciplines, presented in France and around the world.

Exhibitions by the Foundation

The Fondation is responsible for scheduling shows for six exhibition spaces worldwide: La Verrière in Brussels, The Gallery at Hermès in New York (photography), Atelier Hermès in Seoul, Third Floor in Singapore, Le Forum in Tokyo and TH13 in Berne (photography). With the help of specialist curators favouring creations in situ, the Fondation produces approximately twenty original exhibitions per year with free access for the public.

Artists' residencies

Firmly committed to promoting creativity, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès broadens its support of artistic production by inviting young visual artists to Hermès manufactures, renowned for their quality products. These young artists are given carte blanche to create an original work starting with ‘a blank slate’, meaning they must have no preconceived notion of the piece they will create. This programme is based on a quaternary model: four years, four mentors (internationally recognised artists), four young visual artists (recommended by the mentors), four manufactures (each one welcoming one artist in residence per year).

Support for the visual arts and photography

In addition to its major programmes, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports projects submitted by external sources, usually cultural institutions and events with which it is already in partnership. The main goal of these projects is to heighten awareness of the artists involved, give their works increased visibility, and give them the opportunity to make contact with the public.
