Artists’ residencies 2014

Carte blanche for visual artists at the heart of the Hermès workshops

The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is launching a new, three-year cycle of residencies at the Hermès workshops. Young artists will work with expert artisans in fine leather, metal and silk, discovering their skills and know-how, and applying them to the creation of new, original works of art.

The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is launching a new, three-year cycle of artists’ residencies. At the same time Condensation – the group exhibition presenting works created during the programme’s first four years of existence – continues its Asian tour.

Three young artists mentored by leading figures in their fields will work in situ at the Hermès workshops, collaborating with skilled artisans to produce their own, original artworks.

Each year, three mentors will each propose an emerging young artist for the programme, and accompany them throughout the course of their residency. After an initial ‘immersion’ phase, the artists will submit projects for new works inspired by the materials and artisan techniques practiced at their chosen workshop. The projects are assessed for feasibility before going into production proper, involving teams of artisans in the making of a new work of art.

The programme’s second, three-year phase involves three new mentors – established figures on the international contemporary art scene, each of whom is also committed to supporting emerging young artists through teaching at major art institutes. The new mentors are French artist Jean-Michel Alberola, Belgian visual artist  Ann Veronica Janssens (both teachers at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris), and American sculptor Richard Fishman, who teaches at Brown University, Rhode Island, in the US.

Each residency is documented in a Cahier de Résidence co-published by Actes Sud and the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès.

Résidences 2014 :

Jean-Michel Alberola mentors Lucie Picandet (France), in residence at the Maroquinerie de Pantin.

Richard Fishman mentors Jennifer Avery (United States), in résidence at Holding Textile Hermès, in Bourgoin-Jallieu.

Ann Veronica Janssens mentors Clarissa Baumann (Brazil), in residence at Puiforcat (fine metalwork) in Pantin.
