Gabriele Chiari will work at the Ateliers AS in Pierre-Bénite, as part of the fourth annual programme of artists’ residencies organised by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès: an opportunity to explore her own work as a painter in the context of printing techniques on silk.
Born in Austria in 1978, Gabriele Chiari is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she studied drawing before focusing on watercolour, her current medium of choice. Her work follows a strict protocol designed to engender form on large-format sheets of paper. Each watercolour work is then reproduced using coloured crayons, on a smaller support. Replacing conventional photographic reproductions, the new, smaller picture captures the original watercolour painting and serves to document her work. In this way, Chiari forges a two-fold corpus of works whose relative status remains ambiguous.
Mentored by Susanna Fritscher, Gabriele Chiari will be in residence at the Hermès silk and textile and headquarters in Pierre-Bénite, in Greater Lyon, from February 2013. Founded in 1937, the workshops now extend over several sites. Ateliers AS specialise in silk-screen printing in the Lyon tradition, with their own ‘colour kitchen’ dedicated to developing new textile dyes.
Running annually since 2010, artists’ residencies organised by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès enable four young visual artists to discover and work with exceptional artisan skills, mentored by established names. A period of immersion in the day-to-day life of the workshops precedes the development of each artist’s ad hoc project. Following a feasibility study, each piece is then created in situ, in collaboration with Hermès artisans.
