Oh You Kyeong’s residency at the Puiforcat metal workshops explores the mastery of fragility through the use of the finest raw materials. Mentored by Giuseppe Penone, Korean-born Kyeong is taking part in the third season of artists’ residencies supported by the Fondation d’Entreprise Hermès.
At 33, Oh You Kyeong has already exhibited widely throughout Asia and France. A graduate of Paris’s École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, she has also worked as a studio assistant for Giuseppe Penone.
Currently based in Korea, Kyeong’s work explores concepts of fragility and lightness through installations inspired by the interaction of air and paper. Her creations invite us to contemplate the role of art as a healing force in an absurd world. Kyeong’s sensitive response to everyday life is a tremendous asset as she rises to the challenge of harnessing virtuoso metalwork techniques at the Puiforcat workshops – a centre of exceptional artisan expertise since 1820. From its origins as a family cutlery business, to joining the Hermès Group in 1993, Puiforcat has maintained the secrets of its proud tradition of silverwork, continually revisiting the masterpieces of family history that constitute its formal heritage in museum collections today.
Launched by the Fondation d’Entreprise Hermès in 2010, the annual programme of artists’ residencies enables four young visual artists, mentored by four established names in their field, to create new work at the heart of the workshops of the house of Hermès, working with expert artisans and drawing on their outstanding skills.
