Following two presentations at La Verrière in Brussels and the Third Floor in Singapore, Belgian artist Laurence Dervaux responds to an invitation from the Atelier Hermès in Seoul. A series of illusory installations celebrate the human body – and its humours – from within.
The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has chosen to present Laurence Dervaux's artistic journey with a collection of her most important works: anatomical sculptures combining the techniques of hand-blown glass, porcelain worked like ivory, and video.
Human Fluids represents various organs of the body – the heart, the intestines, the abdomen – and the coloured liquids they secrete: breast milk, water, blood, urine. Fragile blown-glass forms capture capture a quantity of red liquid, for example, equivalent to the amount of blood pumped by a human heart in 37 minutes.
Laurence Dervaux explores the very heart of the relationship between life and death, through the opposition of geometric and organic forms, transparency and opacity. The viewer is immersed in a journey leading from the pleasure of superficial, visual beauty to a far more uncomfortable, ambiguous place. Conceived as gems, her glass organs, porcelain skeletons and coloured bodily fluids evoke and examine concepts of eternity and temporality, equilibrium and instability, birth and death.
