A night-long immersion in Christian Rizzo’s installation: for the 2016 Nuit Blanche (‘white night’), the French choreographer and artist offers an astonishing re-animation of the courtyard of Paris’s Hôtel-Dieu hospital, in response to a commission from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès.
For the space of a single night, a geometric installation six metres in diameter will transfigure a little-known site in central Paris. Fascinated by ‘forms interposed between the self and other people’, Christian Rizzo has created a huge moving disc designed to foster a new relationship with the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu, using mirrors and lighting to enact a shimmering play of apparitions and disappearances.
Associated with fragmented sounds, the disc engenders a strange presence, revealing the moving bodies of spectators and the site’s harmonious, neoclassical architecture, split into two and circumscribed by double porticos. As a total, interactive work, Christian Rizzo’s creation invites us to rediscover this open space: a veritable lung at the heart of a hospital complex, itself located in the very heart of Paris.
In its role as artistic director of Paris’s Nuit Blanche 2016, the Palais de Tokyo invited the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès to invest the space of the Hôtel-Dieu courtyard with a specially commissioned programme of work. For our inaugural participation in this iconic Paris event, the Foundation has commissioned Christian Rizzo to create a form in situ, inhabiting the space for the entire night of 1 October 2016. The ephemeral installation is part of the Foundation’s programme New Settings #6, which supports its production and presentation on site.
