Bouchra Ouizguen’s Corbeaux (‘Ravens’) is a living sculpture. Thirty women dancers form a single entity of movement and sound. Presented with the Festival d’Automne at venues across Paris and the Paris region, Corbeaux is an intimate, up-close performance offering an experience of rare intensity.
In this performance originally devised for the opening of the Marrakech Biennale in 2014, choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen continues her exploration of society, the visual arts and folk traditions in her home country of Morocco. At the crossroads of multiple influences, Corbeaux is inspired by the ritual trance dances of the Marrakech region, and by the community figure of the uncensored ‘fool’ in Persian literature of the 8th to the 11th centuries CE.
Thirty dark silhouettes wearing white headscarves occupy the open space, producing sounds and marking out rhythms with staccato jerks of the head. The result is a kind of collective litany, extremely taxing for its performers, and fascinating for the audience caught up in its raw energy. We leave this profoundly affecting performance convinced that something has occurred, here and now, hic et nunc.
For the current season of performances (free of charge), Bouchra Ouizguen invites twenty Moroccan women living in the Paris region to join ten women of different generations from Morocco’s Aïta tradition – cabaret singers whose status is ambivalent in their home country. The performance is engendered through workshops and discussions, transcending the group’s differences in a celebration of collective force. Corbeaux’s French premiere is part of New Settings #6 from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, which supports its production and staging across the Île-de-France region (at the Centre national de la danse in Pantin, the Centre Pompidou, the Théâtre Paul Éluard in Choisy-le-Roi, the Nouveau Théâtre de Montreuil, T2G - Théâtre de Gennevilliers, and the Louvre), with the Festival d’Automne, Paris.
