Crossing the Line 2017

Three New Settings productions to be staged in New York

For the fifth consecutive year, selected New Settings shows will be staged for American audiences as part of the Foundation’s partnership with New York’s Crossing the Line festival. Three distinctive works from the Foundation’s flagship programme for the performing arts have been chosen for a series of transatlantic dates.

The 11th Crossing the Line festival will present three shows supported by the Foundation’s New Settings programme, as part of an international season focusing, as always, on work at the crossroads between artistic disciplines. Created by the FIAF (French Institute Alliance Française), Crossing the Line has become a fixture on New York’s Fall season cultural calendar, noted for its capacity to challenge and push back the boundaries between the arts. As such, the festival is a natural partner for the Foundation, enabling us to bring new work supported by New Settings to the United States.

Three New Settings artists have been selected to perform in New York in 2017. American artist Annie Dorsen (New Settings #7) will present The Great Outdoors ahead of its performance in Paris, further reinforcing the links between the two festivals. Noted for her experimental works using algorithms to shape narrative, Dorsen creates a planetarium setting in which the audience experiences a musical, sound and visual work composed at random.

Choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni (New Settings #5) presents an experimental performance, UNTITLED_I will be there when you die, in which juggling becomes an ordeal, a challenge and a race against death. Lastly, Moroccan choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen’s powerful work Corbeaux (‘Ravens’, presented at New Settings #6) will be performed in the public space. Once again, the cast of Moroccan professionals will work with a group of local women volunteers to master breath control for a litanic performance bordering on trance.
