I’ve never done this before – the universal ‘rider’ to innumerable DIY videos online…
Barbara Matijević and Giuseppe Chico present an ‘anthropological’ performance exploring the world of open-access creativity in a stage environment created with Ivan Marušić Klif
Fascinated by the exponential, hyper-creative amateur culture of YouTube, and by the endless variety of skills and inventions which ordinary people can now broadcast to the entire world, Croatian artist Barbara Matijević and Italian Giuseppe Chico (together known as 1er Stratagème) present a performance conceived as a projection of the Internet onstage: ‘a brief inventory of tales from YouTube, that infinite storehouse and transformer of reality.’ The duo called on Croatian artist Ivan Marušić Klif to design and stage a series of technical pieces for theatre, inspired by the world of DIY online.
On stage, Barbara is accompanied by Wilson, a friendly origami-style robot, connected to the Internet and able to churn out text from the world-wide Web: recipes, song lyrics, economic analyses and more. A system of multiple cameras mounted on a helmet allows the wearer to see themselves ‘in the third person’ like a character in a video game. A cheap micro-controller transforms the home into a fictional setting projected light years from Earth. A home-made mask with a handful of LED lights helps the wearer to navigate their dream world, and to survive their private nightmares – all by the light of the EL wire defining the décor, and the performer’s silhouette.
In this show dedicated to the accumulation and diversity of forms, Barbara Matijević experiments with the material on-stage and the processes of DIY, in a series of short narratives and sketches. Counterbalancing the global arena of the Internet, the piece draws on the intimacy of the theatre for an anthropological exploration of the Internet, and the exhibitionist impulses and boundless creativity fuelling the flat, non-hierarchical nature of social networks.
