When a star of French bande dessinée joins forces with one of the top names in chanson, the sparks are sure to fly (Zapp! Boom! Pow!). The girl of the title sits astride her motorbike, red hair streaming in the wind, and the audience prepares to savour a delicious, pop opera erotica, bursting with juvenile glee and free-wheeling fantasies…
La Fille stormed onto France’s graphic novel scene in spring 2013, achieving instant cult status with her adventures on the roads of an imaginary Sierra Nevada, taking the love of her life (a Tom-thumb-sized cowboy) along for the ride, tucked into the belt of her jeans. Small but perfectly formed, her unlikely companion grows (quite literally) with each new embrace, each calculated snub. The road to love is far from smooth, but littered with musical and graphic nuggets of the purest gold, it’s a comic fan’s Eldorado.
Our heroine boasts a distinguished parentage: Christophe Blain is a key figure in contemporary comics, winner of multiple awards at the genre’s annual jamboree, the Festival d’Angoulême, with a fine line in pirates, crooks and tall adventures, author of the hugely successful album Quai d’Orsay (2010). Barbara Carlotti is a unique voice in French music, a laureate of the Académie Charles Cros and the Victoires de la Musique, elegantly poised — unclassifiable, ironic —somewhere between chanson and pop. She knew nothing about the world of comic books. He knew nothing about the world of the celebrated singer-songwriter-composer. But worlds collide, albums were exchanged, and when the two discovered a clutch of shared passions, they decided to team up and write.
La Fille was born… New Settings is delighted to follow in the smoky wake of her powerful machine, with a second clash of comic-book and performance cultures, after the success of the pioneering 2013 production Qu’est-ce qui nous arrive ? ! ?
With live music performed by a cast of actor-musicians, La Fille is a frenetic BD-brought-to-life, mixing drawings, film and frames from the original book. A road-movie, cabaret, drive-in and wild, wild Western, fizzing with (speech) bubbles, like a refreshing gulp of champagne.
