A recital, an animated cartoon, an illustrated book: the Nature Theater of Oklahoma tackles a variety of art forms for Life and Times, a proteiform work that presents an unfolding panorama of the life and times of a middle-class American woman. The 8th instalment, in cinematic form, will be screened at Paris’s Théâtre de la Cité Internationale.
Kristin Worrall is an American woman, born on Providence Road, the youngest of three children. Her pre-school friends were Johna Mollicone, Cheryl Winters, and Cindy Legrand. Today, she’s 34 years old, and loyal fans of the Nature Theater of Oklahoma know all there is to know about her life, her family and her cat. Now, Paris welcomes the eighth instalment of her biographical saga, Life and Times.
Kristin Worrall has told us everything, in detail, in a telephone monologue lasting almost sixteen hours to date, peppered with hesitations and quirks of language – the central strand of a multiform performance conceived over time. Each episode corresponds to an episode in Kristin’s life, taking a different artistic form. For the eighth episode in the series, directors Pavol Liška and Kelly Cooper take on the world of cinema as part of the New Settings programme from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès: Kristin has finished university, and prepares to enter adult life. The theatre becomes the setting for a full colour, cinemascope film with a musical score, shot exclusively out of doors using only natural light, and above all ‘in harmony with nature’. The scenes, editing and music were created and carried out solely by members of the troupe, with painstaking care. Once again, Life and Times has prompted a new experience, and the learning of new creative skills. A bold challenge, brilliantly met by the Nature Theater of Oklahoma.
