Lives (New Settings 2013)

Exploring the meanders of selfhood

How to create a single blueprint from a multifaceted self? If Ali Moini was a painter, Lives would be a reworking of an existing canvas. The piece revisits, unravels and reworks a solo piece - My Paradoxical Life - premiered in Tehran in 2008. The setting by musician and design George Apostolakos captures the essence of the work.

The fragmentation of identity, the mutability of existence, moving dramaturgy, and the search for selfhood: all recurrent themes in Ali Moini’s work, handled with brio in his group piece It Shocks me but not you.

Trained as a musician and singer in his native Iran, Moini later moved to Europe to learn with a series of leading choreographers. His work has featured at major festivals, the Théâtre de Chaillot (Paris) and in New York. His contemporary dance practice embraces audio and visual forms, perfectly echoed in the work of Greek visual artist, performer and musician George Apostolakos, (a former mathematics and visual arts student), ably exploiting the possibilities of new digital media.  The pair are close friends working at the intersection of artistic disciplines in the pure spirit of the New Settings programme. This is their first joint work, exploring the meanders of selfhood.

Sound is central to Ali Moini’s formal artistic language, and George Apostolakos’s  design for the piece. Meticulous amplification multiplies the performer’s voice, words and narrative, engendering endless ‘others’ and encouraging an exploration of the possibilities of plural self-dialogue.

As with any journey to the centre of the self, the ultimate destination remains unknown. ‘If I knew where the performance was headed from the start, I wouldn’t go there,’ says Ali Moini.
