A performance by Ali Moini (New Settings #6)

A dancer is connected to a marionette that ensures the simultaneous translation of his body-language – a priori. Ali Moini takes to the stage with his puppet double in a stand-off that’s part transposition, part accompaniment, part manipulation.

Iranian dancer and choreographer Ali Moini pulls all the strings in this performance: his body is connected at multiple points to that of a marionette, by an ingenious play of cables and pulleys. Each gesture on the part of the performer entails a movement by his double. It falls to us to appreciate the quality of the final translation: an identical reproduction of the original gesture? Straightforward intent? A transposition to something quite different?

Offering a new take on the communication between the dancer and his double, the project evokes the figure of Rostam, a hero of Persian mythology. In this emotionally restrained piece, the Farsi proverb that gives the performance its name (roughly translatable as ‘I owe my glory to Rostam’) resonates with concepts of the usurper, the double, or the avatar.

After Lives – presented at New Settings#3, featuring a body in motion connected to a system of strings – Ali Moini returns with this new solo show (if we discount the presence of his inanimate alter ego). French scenographer Julien Peissel has developed a sophisticated apparatus of tailor-made cables to ‘remote-control’ the life-sized marionette. The project is part of New Settings #6 from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, which supports its production and staging at the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris.
