How can one bring monuments to life? Monumental offers a theatrical answer: multitalented artist Jocelyn Cottentin is the author of this history of the art of choreography, offering a new perspective on our cultural heritage.
This is a performance with no backstage: a simple frame drawn on the floor materialises the boundary between the space where the action is constructed, and the space beyond the stage. Everything is in plain sight, as we watch the work taking shape in its entirety. French artist Jocelyn Cottencin regularly crosses artistic boundaries in his work, taking a performative approach that challenges Western visual culture.
On stage, twelve performers come together, create situations, take up positions, move around, step outside the frame… Enhanced and shaped by colourful costumes and long sticks, Monumental’s lively, action-filled sequences are presented in rapid succession, while the audience catches fleeting glimpses of evocations of architecture, artworks, and artists. Individuals are free to project their own references onto this polysemic, continuous, fluidly executed performance.
Far from re-solidifying monuments that are by essence hieratic, Jocelyn Cottencin offers a scenic stroll – visual, cultural and physical – through the history of Western art. The spectator is invited to move around the pictures, altering his or her perspective and grasping their full dynamic. Monumental’s unexpected exploration of our collective memory is part of New Settings #6 from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, which supports its production and staging at the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris.
