Now in its sixth year, New Settings presents an expanded format, encompassing a broad range of experimental performance works. The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is supporting more artists than ever for the production and staging of their projects, with cultural institutions across the Paris region.
New Settings #6 features a total of thirteen productions, including five at Paris’s Théâtre de la Cité internationale, selected from the Foundation’s annual international call for projects. Eight further projects receive support upstream in the production process, for performances in partnership with cultural institutions across the Paris region.
The thirteen productions address multiple theatrical disciplines: contemporary dance, performance, new experimental forms, narrative, and intense explorations of physicality. New Settings engages with the world of circus for the first time this year. This and other practices from beyond the artistic mainstream are presented as part of a resolutely international line-up, with companies from the United States, Iran, Austria, Finland, Morocco and Poland.
Beyond the original call for projects, and the resulting season of performances in Paris, New Settings becomes a label for the Foundation’s support for artists exploring new expressive forms at the frontier of the visual arts: companies like the Nature Theater of Oklahoma, performing this autumn in New York City, where NTO’s project Life and Times – Episode 8 opens the tenth Crossing the Line festival, organised by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF). The sung film precedes performances of episodes 7 and 9 from this protean biographical epic.
