New Settings #7

An increasingly ambitious programme

True to form, New Settings #7 goes boldly along the road less travelled, with sixteen new productions whose creative inspiration is drawn from a range of artistic disciplines, each offering audiences an unprecedented, fertile theatrical experience at the intersection of diverse cultural practices.

New Settings has grown and developed over its seven-year history, forging numerous partnerships. As a programme of support from inception through to production, New Settings allows the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès to accompany emerging and established artists in the making of new works for the stage. From September to December 2017, audiences can experience sixteen new works selected for the programme, embracing innovative hybrid forms that transcend conventional categorisation, from the visual arts and dance, to theatre, film, music, and even the realm of science.

Beyond the programme’s core focus on the interface between the visual and performing arts, the latest season highlights two central themes: in challenging times, Mohamed El Khatib, Gaëlle Bourges and Boris Charmatz each explore the individual’s role and engagement with urban life, while striking works by Liz Santoro and Pierre Godard, Noé Soulier, Cyril Teste and Annie Dorsen are highly complex productions, stressing the importance of the Foundation’s focus on support upstream in the creative process.

In 2017, the Foundation continues its special relationship with the original New Settings partner, Paris’s Théâtre de la Cité internationale, as the host of six works selected from an international call for projects. Other pieces will be supported in partnership with a range of cultural institutions offering optimal conditions for the presentation of each individual work.

New Settings #7 also furthers the Foundation’s long-standing support for artists such as Boris Charmatz, Noé Soulier and Alain Buffard, who died in 2013, and whose work Les Inconsolés, premiered in 2005, will be recreated this season.
