GwinZegal in Guingamp, Brittany, is an arts and research centre, workplace and platform, dedicated to new photographic work and an extensive programme of public events promoting and exploring the medium. The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports GwinZegal across the full spectrum of its activities.
Launched in 2002, GwinZegal is a rurally-located centre with a wide range of activities promoting photography and image-making. Part of a European network of partner institutions, the Centre is widely acknowledged for its influential programme of residencies, colloquia, exhibitions, publications and training, with a particular focus on three key areas: the heritage and history of photography, rural life, and contemporary creative art.
GwinZegal works with young photographers over the long term — most recently Charles Fréger, Alexandra Catiere, Mathieu Pernot, Raphaël Dallaporta and Anne Golaz — offering residencies and support for the creation and dissemination of new work, in particular through its publishing programme. Complementing the Centre’s support for new creative work, GwinZegal is committed to developing its local, rural outreach with the launch of Le Studio [GwinZegal]/Ecole du Regard, a new facility for practical information and resources on photography and image-making, aimed at school pupils and adults alike.
The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has been a close follower of GwinZegal for six years, through the Centre’s director Paul Cottin, who also curates the Foundation’s photography space TH13 in Berne. Now, the Foundation has committed to a programme of direct support for GwinZegal, partnering its development activities over the next two years.
