Immersion is a powerful statement of commitment to support creative photography on both sides of the Atlantic. Launched by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès in partnership with the Aperture Foundation, New York, this new programme features exchange residencies, exhibitions and publications.
Immersion is a programme of support for creative photography, from the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and the Aperture Foundation, reflecting their shared values, commitment to artistic excellence and determination to intervene upstream in the production of new photographic work.
Immersion is centred on an exchange of residencies in France and the United States. This new venture enables photographers from both countries to take part in alternate residencies for the making of new photographic series, in situ.
Each year, one or other of the two foundations chooses a ‘mentor’ from its own country. A professional in the field of photography, he or she first submits a shortlist of twelve candidates to the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, and then mentors the winner throughout his or her residency on the other side of the Atlantic. The resulting work is presented in an exhibition at the Aperture Foundation in New York, and is the subject of a volume in English and French, published by Aperture for the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès.
Our partnership with the Aperture Foundation also includes an annual exhibition in New York, as a complement to the Immersion programme. In this context, the winner of the Prix Henri Cartier-Bresson (of which the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is sole patron) is invited to stage a show of work at the Aperture Gallery, enhancing his or her visibility in the United States. In alternate years, an exhibition will be staged by American curator Cory Jacobs, supported by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès for her ground-breaking work in the field of contemporary photography.
