Panorama 16 - Solus Locus

Support for young video artists at Le Fresnoy

Dedicated to the art of the image, Le Fresnoy – France's national studio for the contemporary arts – is a centre for study and the production of new work, with a two-year course training the artists of tomorrow. Panorama 16 is a public exhibition of work by young artists and guest teachers for the year 2013-2014, created under professional conditions.

Opened in 1997 in the French town of Tourcoing, Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds, with an interest in developing their digital art, photography, video and filmmaking skills on a two-year course, the only one of its kind offered at art school in France. The school's founder, artistic and course director is filmmaker, photographer, visual artist and writer Alain Fleischer.

Each year, all students take part in a group show, Panorama, alongside work by the school's team of guest teachers (all practising artists). In this context, for the second year in succession, the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès is delighted to support young artists making ambitious new works for the show.

Four students received the Foundation's support for Panorama 16 (subtitled Solus Locus) : Élisabeth Caravella's film Howto is an experimental computer animation taking a sidelong look at online tutorial videos. Taiwanese artist Kai-Chun Chiang presents The Journal of Fort Zeelandia, an exploration of the over-layering of past and present against the background of a quest for identity. Léo Pacquelet's fictional short feature Un métier virgule deux presents a dysfunctional workday in an industrial context. Finally, Nicolas-Pierre Réveillard's work Coeur is a journey through the mental space of two brothers.

Complementing this support, the Foundation has also made its H-Box mobile video screening unit available at Le Fresnoy for a three-year period beginning in 2013.
