Founded in 1989 and relaunched in 2003 with the opening of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, the eponymous photography prize is awarded by an international jury to a photographer whose work makes a sensitive contribution to the documentary tradition. Josef Koudelka, Jim Goldberg, David Goldblatt and Vanessa Winship are among the past winners.

In 2013, the Fondation d’entreprise agreed to support the next three editions of the prize, as sole sponsor. United in their commitment to new artworks combining artisan expertise and creativity, the two institutions are delighted to secure this long-term partnership promoting new work in photography.

Awarded biennially, the Prix Henri Cartier-Bresson enables photographers to work on a personal project they would otherwise be unable to complete.  Each winner is given eighteen months to complete the work, following the attribution of the prize. The results are the object of an exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, and an accompanying book. Focused on major photographic series, the prize embodies two of the Foundation’s core missions, to help artists produce new work, and exhibit to a wider public.
