Chaînes de valeurs et biodiversité

New research project in partnership with IDDRI

As part of our commitment to preserve biodiversity, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is supporting a new research project steered by IDDRI, focusing on the role of value chains. A dedicated conference series will present the project and its progress to the public at large.

“In the face of growing internationalisation, the regulation of value chains in the private and public sector remains a major challenge. At present, businesses commit to sustainable production methods on a purely voluntary basis, yet this is without doubt the key to winning the battle.” Taking this observation in the proceedings of the 2014 Biodiversity Conference as its starting point, IDDRI is supporting a research project looking at Local biodiversity and the  governance of global value chains, supported by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès as part of our commitment to the preservation of biodiversity.

The project is devoted to exploring the question of value chain governance, as a collective examination of how a single product’s intermediary producers and distributors (spreading value along the chain as a whole) can work together to preserve the environment. This innovative approach complements individual business initiatives to implement environmental and social policies. In tandem with the project, a series of three public lectures is planned, offering a forum for discussion and debate, and delivering updates on progress at key stages.

At the end of the project, research outcomes will be published and disseminated jointly by IDDRI and the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, partners since 2009. Faced by challenges that concern all of us, both organisations felt it essential to take concrete action to facilitate the public understanding of this vital question.
