In Madagascar, the not-for-profit association Les Enfants du Soleil works with abandoned children, removing them from the street and helping them to reconnect with community and family life. The scheme includes a structured teaching programme preparing each child for the world of work.
Les Enfants du Soleil is a not-for profit association offering long-term help and support for vulnerable street children in Madagascar, many of whom have been abandoned by their families. The association helps them to reconnect with a stable, social environment and lay the foundations of new lives as responsible citizens. The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports the programme’s commitment to provide guaranteed access to education for the very poorest children.
Four centres reach out to children living unsupervised on the streets, offering safe overnight accommodation and gradually encouraging them to forge sustainable relationships with group leaders who can help them to re-join their families. Where this proves possible, the association pays each child’s education costs, provides medical and psychological support, and ensures they remain in regular attendance at school.
Child who cannot join their families remain in one of the six villages built by the association throughout Madagascar. Each provides a home for fifteen children and two youth leaders, enabling them to grow up in a modest but stable family environment. Children receive remedial teaching prior to entering mainstream education; older children and young adults are given professional training and support into the world of work.
The programme is supported by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès as part of its H³ programme (Head – Heart – Hand).
