Jeunesse Tizgui (H³ #2)

Yeast for tomorrow’s world

In southern Morocco, a group of women is working to establish a community bakery, with the support of the not-for-profit association Jeunesse Tizgui. Steered by the women themselves, the scheme enables them to establish a business of vital importance for everyday life in their village, while acquiring new skills and autonomy.

In southern Morocco, a group of women is working to establish a community bakery, with the support of the not-for-profit association Jeunesse Tizgui. Steered by the women themselves, the scheme enables them to establish a business of vital importance for everyday life in their village, while acquiring new skills and autonomy.

In Tizgui Irighen, the men of the village are absent, working far from home. Confronted by a rural exodus that leaves them vulnerable, the village’s women are mobilising to establish a bakery. On a personal level, the scheme helps the women acquire new skills and enhanced autonomy, while at the same time boosting the village’s socio-economic development. As the first bakery in the region, the initiative will also benefit local people across a wider area.

The women are steering every aspect of the project themselves, as the culmination of a commitment to social solidarity over a number of years. Thirty women have mutualised equipment for community celebrations and festivities, launched the not-for-profit association Tamount (for women’s development), and coordinated their efforts to establish a rota to make and sell bread. With an emphasis on development and solidarity, the French not-for-profit association Jeunesse Tizgui has been mandated to support the building of a community bakery.

In the heart of an underprivileged region, this innovative, grass-roots project is all the more remarkable for being wholly based on the expertise of a group of determined women with proven experience as bread-makers. The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports Jeunesse Tizgui’s involvement in the women’s drive to open and manage their own collective bakery, as part of the second edition of our H³ programme (Heart – Head – Hand).
