Le Bois (“Wood”) is the first volume in a new collection, Savoir & Faire (“Knowledge in action”) launched by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and Editions Actes Sud. The encyclopedic work presents an overview of current knowledge and practices in the rich and complex world of wood.
Why are limes traditionally thought of as ‘positive’ trees? What are the properties of densified wood? How will wood be used in tomorrow’s building industry? Over five extensive chapters and some 420 pages, Le Bois offers an encyclopedic, cross-disciplinary exploration of this most essential material. Examining the status quo in diverse, often complementary sectors – from design and perfumery to instrument-making, and research and development – the book’s essays offer an overview of current skills and practice, and the potential for future innovation.
Co-published with Actes Sud, Le Bois is an initiative of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, based on the first edition of our annual Skills Academy, which was dedicated to the world of wood. This reference work is the first in a new series, Savoir & Faire (“Knowledge in action”), conceived in a classic encyclopedic format, as part of the Foundation’s commitment to promote artisan skills and expertise to the public at large.
Forty expert contributors have written articles for the lavishly illustrated volume, showcasing the value of shared knowledge and intelligence.
Edited by Hugues Jacquet, this exhaustive work features contributions by leading figures taking part in the Skills Academy, extended and commented by leading specialists. Le Bois offers a lively summary and in-depth portrait of an industry based on an ancestral raw material, at the forefront of innovation for tomorrow’s world.
