The Association François-Xavier Bagnoud

Education and protection for the vulnerable children of Myanmar

Founded in 1989, the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud fights poverty and AIDS in 18 countries. In Myanmar, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports a programme to educate and protect vulnerable children outside the school system.

Helping others was his job: rescue pilot François-Xavier Bagnoud was killed on a humanitarian mission over Mali. Honouring his dedication, his mother Albina du Boisrouvray has created an association in his name, to "fight poverty and AIDS, and support the vulnerable orphans this pandemic has left in its wake." Now in its 20th year, the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud is an internationally-recognised NGO employing over 400 people in the field.

The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès supports a programme to educate and protect vulnerable children outside the school system in Myanmar, for a three-year period during which a comprehensive, sustainable cycle will be established, helping almost 1,000 children. Literate children will receive professional training in sewing, weaving and woodwork, together with money from the sale of their handiwork. The others will be taught reading, writing and arithmetic.

All will be taught about the risks they face, and ways to overcome them. In this poverty-stricken country, many pupils are forced to leave school at an early age. Without qualifications, they are exposed to violence, trafficking and abuse. Training and education give them the tools to take charge of their lives.
